There's no dog quite like a Doberman.
Elegant and fierce, deeply loyal and quietly sensitive — they're misunderstood by people who've never owned one, and completely understood by people who have.
Lei le Grand paints Doberman portraits that go beyond likeness. Using professional watercolours on 100% cotton fine art paper, each piece captures the personality of your specific dog — not a generic Doberman, but yours. The way they hold their head. The expression they save just for you.
Each portrait is painted entirely by hand. No digital filters, no AI, no shortcuts. Just pigment, water, and genuine attention to who your dog is.
Painting Dobermans
Lei has a personal connection to the breed — her own Doberman, Chloé, is one of her greatest inspirations and appears throughout her portfolio. That familiarity shows in the work. She understands the architecture of the breed: the clean lines of the head, the deep chest, the way a Doberman holds itself with a kind of quiet authority.
In watercolour, that contrast between strength and sensitivity translates beautifully. The rich black and tan coat catches light in ways that suit the medium — deep shadows, warm highlights, and the unmistakable amber eyes that Doberman owners know so well. Red and blue Dobermans bring their own warmth and subtlety to the paper.
What Lei focuses on above all is expression. Dobermans are an intensely communicative breed — they watch, they read the room, they have opinions. A good Doberman portrait captures that alertness. Not a static likeness, but a moment of presence.
A portrait that lasts
Every commission is painted on 300gsm 100% cotton fine art paper using professional lightfast watercolours. This isn't paper that yellows or fades — it's archival quality, made to last decades. Many clients frame their portrait and hang it as a permanent piece in their home. Others order one as a gift for a fellow Doberman owner who will immediately understand exactly what they're looking at.
If your Doberman has passed away, Lei also paints memorial portraits from photos. It's some of the most meaningful work she does.

THE ARTIST
"I've always been drawn to the quiet language of animals — the way a single look can reveal an entire personality."
Hi, I'm Lei. I’m a watercolor artist who lives with two Maine Coon cats and a Doberman named Chloé — and they inspire me every day.
My portraits aren't just likenesses. They're about the sparkle in the eyes, the muddy paws at the door, the feeling of unconditional love.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes — Lei paints all colour variations. The rich contrast of a black & tan coat and the warmth of a red Doberman both work beautifully in watercolour.
-
At least three to five, taken in good natural light. A straight-on face shot is essential, but photos showing your Doberman's personality — mid-run, relaxed at home, that signature alert stare — help Lei capture who they really are.
-
Not at all. Lei paints your dog exactly as they are — cropped, natural, docked tail or not. The portrait is of your dog, not a breed standard.
-
Yes, as long as the photo is reasonably clear and in focus. Lei has worked from photos of dogs that have passed away — it's one of the most meaningful commissions she does.

A3 (€150) tends to suit Dobermans particularly well — their strong features and elegant build have more room to breathe at the larger size. A4 (€80) works beautifully too, especially as a gift.
