Jack Russell owners don't need to be told their dog has personality. They live with the evidence every single day.
The stubbornness. The fearlessness. The bottomless energy and the absolute certainty that they are, in fact, in charge. And underneath all of it — fierce, unwavering loyalty to the people they love.
Lei le Grand paints Jack Russell portraits that catch what makes them so irresistible. The alert expression, the attitude in the eyes, the particular way your Jack Russell looks at the world like it's all there for their entertainment.
Painting Jack Russells
Don't let the size fool you. Jack Russells have more personality per centimetre than almost any other breed — and that personality is exactly what makes them such compelling subjects to paint.
The challenge with Jack Russells in watercolour is capturing their energy in a still image. Lei focuses on the eyes — bright, alert, always slightly calculating — and the posture that gives away their character even when they're sitting still. A Jack Russell is never fully at rest, and a good portrait captures that.
The coat variations across the breed — smooth, rough, and broken — each require a different approach. Smooth coats need clean, confident brushwork. Rough and broken coats allow for more texture and layering, building up the wirier fur with multiple washes. The classic white-with-patches colouring requires careful handling of the white areas, letting the paper work in the artist's favour.
A portrait that lasts
Every commission is painted on 300gsm 100% cotton fine art paper using professional lightfast watercolours — archival quality built to last for decades. Jack Russell owners are famously devoted to their dogs, and a portrait reflects that devotion.
If your Jack Russell has passed away, Lei also paints memorial portraits from photos. It's some of the most meaningful work she does.

THE ARTIST
"I've always been drawn to the quiet language of animals — the way a single look can reveal an entire personality."
Hi, I'm Lei. I’m a watercolor artist who lives with two Maine Coon cats and a Doberman named Chloé — and they inspire me every day.
My portraits aren't just likenesses. They're about the sparkle in the eyes, the muddy paws at the door, the feeling of unconditional love.
