Watercolor Maine Coon Portraits
Majestic, mysterious, and entirely on their own terms. Hand-painted watercolor portraits for the cat that owns the room.
From €80 · Ships worldwide · Ready in 2–3 weeks
Maine Coons are not ordinary cats, and their owners know it.
The size, the fur, the tufted ears and enormous paws — they look like something from another era, a wild thing that decided domestication was worth trying. And then there's the personality: dog-like loyalty, relentless curiosity, opinions about everything.
Lei le Grand lives with two Maine Coons. She understands the breed from the inside — not as a subject to paint, but as daily companions whose every expression she knows by heart.
That familiarity shows in every portrait. Using professional watercolours on 100% cotton fine art paper, Lei captures the particular presence of your Maine Coon — the texture of the fur, the intelligence in the eyes, the unmistakable sense that they're quietly judging everything.
Every portrait is painted entirely by hand. No digital filters, no AI. Just real paint and genuine understanding.
Painting Maine Coons
Maine Coons present a particular challenge in watercolour — and that's precisely what makes them rewarding to paint. The fur alone requires real skill: the layered length, the colour variation from root to tip, the ruff around the neck and the plume of the tail. Lei builds this up in multiple washes, letting the paper and pigment work together to create depth and texture that a photograph can't replicate.
The eyes are equally important. Maine Coons often have gold, green, or copper eyes with an alertness that borders on intensity — Lei pays close attention to getting this right, because it's where the personality lives.
Colour variations across the breed are wide — classic brown tabby, silver, black, white, red, tortoiseshell and everything in between. Each brings its own demands and its own beauty on paper. Lei has painted several Maine Coons and welcomes any variation.
A portrait worth keeping
Every commission is painted on 300gsm 100% cotton fine art paper using professional lightfast watercolours — archival quality that won't fade or yellow over time. Maine Coon owners tend to be serious about their cats, and the portrait reflects that seriousness.
If your Maine Coon has passed away, Lei also paints memorial portraits from photos. It's some of the most meaningful work she does.

THE ARTIST
"I've always been drawn to the quiet language of animals — the way a single look can reveal an entire personality."
Hi, I'm Lei. I’m a watercolor artist who lives with two Maine Coon cats and a Doberman named Chloé — and they inspire me every day.
My portraits aren't just likenesses. They're about the sparkle in the eyes, the muddy paws at the door, the feeling of unconditional love.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes — this is actually one of watercolour's strengths. Lei builds up the fur in multiple layers, working wet on dry to create depth and texture. Long-haired cats like Maine Coons translate beautifully to the medium.
-
Absolutely. Lei paints all Maine Coon colour variations. Just send clear photos in good natural light and she'll work from those.
-
At least three to five. A clear face-on shot is essential, but photos that show your cat's fur texture, size, and personality — stretched out, alert, mid-yawn — all help Lei get beneath the surface likeness.
-
Maine Coons are big cats, and A3 (€150) gives their fur, size and presence the room they deserve on paper. A4 (€80) works beautifully too, especially as a gift — but if you want to do justice to the full Maine Coon look, A3 is worth it.
-
Yes. Lei paints memorial portraits from photos and handles these commissions with particular care. As long as you have clear photos, she can paint them.
